'Not So Anymore'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… It used to be that the world seemed so big.  Watching the news on television of places around the globe seemed of little concern because those places seemed in another universe.  Not so anymore. Our Korean Church, Immanuel UMC, under the leadership of its Pastor, Daniel Shin, meets every night at 8:00 PM for prayer on behalf of their concern for the Korean Peninsula.  They have family and friends of whom they are deeply concerned.  The heated rhetoric between President Trump ...

re:Vision - Serving God, Serving Neighbor at Ariel Bowen UMC

By Rev. Arundel Hope Thursday, July 20, was a day filled with anxiety, excitement, anticipation, relief and fulfillment in the life of Ariel Bowen Memorial United Methodist Church.  Pulling into the church parking lot, it was running over with TV cameras, reporters, government officials, community leaders, church members and local residents, everyone eagerly awaiting a truck load of fans to be distributed to neighbors, especially seniors, in the community.  These fans are to relieve the ...

Jump Off the Page

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Have you ever had words jump off the page at you?  You were reading a book; an article or even the Bible when all of a sudden there was a word, a phrase, a paragraph that seemed written just for you?  I know I have had this experience on many occasions. It could have to do with context.  If I’m struggling with something…some decision…some person…some issue then subconsciously that ‘need’ is looking for some insight.  And BOOM…words jump off the page.  Or it could be the Holy ...

re:Vision - Respite Care Serves Community

(Photo: United Methodist Communications) By Julie Wright The Alzheimer’s Association estimates the number of adults 65 and older diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and related dementias will increase 46 percent by 2025. And that doesn’t include those who will go undiagnosed. Many will depend on a spouse or family member to provide care in the home. When caregivers need a few hours for self-care – doctor appointments, errands, time with friends – what are their options? In a survey of the population ...

I Was Thinking… A woman went to the doctor’s office where she was seen by one of the younger physicians.  After approximately four minutes in the examination room, she burst forth from the room screaming and running down the hall.  An older physician stopped her and asked what the problem was upon which she told him of her experience with the younger physician.  After listening for several minutes he had her sit with a nurse to relax in another room. It was then the older physician marched ...

Poker Faces

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Have you seen the present day television advertisement for Toyota where the man has what is called a ‘poker face’ but doesn’t have ‘poker arms’?  What an interesting twist…the man can keep his excitement for a great automobile deal in check in terms of facial expressions but his arms go wild with excitement at this great Toyota car deal.  That Toyota commercial has me thinking.  Jesus was recorded in Matthew’s Gospel to have said “You’re here to be light, bringing out the ...

Lifelong Learner

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… One of the greatest compliments a person can give another person is “They are lifelong learners”.  One of the worst comments that can be made of someone is “They think they know it all!”  I suspect you have known both along your life’s journey.  When you read this I will be at Pastor’s School with many clergy who find this event a wonderful opportunity to continue the path of being a ‘lifelong learner’.  Other clergy will seek out that timely event with subject matter that ...

'Be Kind'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Kindness is an amazing gift.  It is listed in the Paul’s famous list of the ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ found in Galatians 5:22 ff.  It is certainly understandable that the BIG three…love, joy and peace would be listed there but why kindness?  Is it really so important to be listed among the nine fruit of the spirit?  Yes it is! Plato once said “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”  Kindness…sounds so simple doesn’t it?  But it can be so difficult.  This is ...

‘Falling Upward’

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Have you ever fallen up a flight of stairs?  I have and it is an experience that caused me to feel foolish and in too big of a hurry.  I wasn’t paying attention.  I bruised my shin as a reminder for several days that I should pay attention not only to walking down stairs but also to walking up stairs. Richard Rohr in his book Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life writes “It is when we begin to pay attention, and seek integrity precisely in the task within ...
